On October 7 at Česká Spořitelna in Prague, a panel discussion on Economics was held featuring Jan Švejnar as Moderator, with Czech National Bank Governor Miroslav Singer, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors at Česká Spořitelna Pavel Kysilka, and Managing Partner of Deloitte Josef Kotrba. AFoCR Directors attended and had a lively discussion with questions and answers by the panelists.
Moderator Jan Švejnar is Director of the Center on Global Economic Governance at Columbia University and a member of the Forum 2000 Foundation Program Council and has served as Economic Advisor to President Havel. He is also founder and Chairman of the Executive and Supervisory Committee of the Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education-Economics Institute (CERGE-EI) in Prague and Director of the Center on Global Economic Governance at Columbia University. He is the Former Director of the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan, where he was also Professor of Business, Economics, and Public Policy. He received his PhD in economics at Princeton University. In 2015, Mr.Švejnar received the IZA Prize in Labor Economics.
Panelist Miroslav Singer is Czech National Bank Governor. Governor Singer has been a member of the Supervisory Boards of Directors at Česká pojišťovna, Expandia Finance. Expandia Banka, Expandia Holding and Chemofind, and at industrial companies such as Jitona, Vigona, and Vlnap. He has been a member of editorial boards of the Journal of Economics and Finance and Business Central Europe. Mr. Singer won the Central Bank Governor of the Year for Emerging Europe 2013 award presented by the Emerging Markets magazine, and the Central Banker of the Year in Europe award for 2014, which he received from the renowned monthly of The Banker. Under his leadership, the CNB won the prestigious Central Banking Transparency Award 2015 for its openness and use of new communication tools.
Panelist Pavel Kysilka is Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors at Česká Spořitelna. From 1990-1991, Mr. Kysilka worked as the Chief Economic Advisor to the Minister for Economic Policy. In the 1990s, he held various positions including the position of Executive Governor of the Czech National Bank where, in 1993, he supervised the splitting of the Czechoslovak currency. From 1994-1997, he served as an expert of the International Monetary Fund and also participated in implementing national currencies in several East European countries. In the nineties, he was President of the Czech Economic Society. Before joining Česká Spořitelna, Mr. Kysilka worked in Erste Bank Sparkassen (CR) in Prague as Executive Director responsible for IT, Organization, Human Resources, and Services. He came to Česká Spořitelna in 2000, serving as Chief Economist and member of the Senior Management Team. On October 5, 2004, the Supervisory Board of Česká Spořitelna appointed him member of the Board of Directors and since January 2011, he has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors responsible for Operations, Economic Analysis, IT, Projects, Corporate Communication, Service Quality, HR, Marketing and Internal Audit. Among other assignments, Mr. Kysilka is a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Economics in Prague.
Panelist Josef Kotrba is a Managing Partner at Deloitte. He has extensive experience in Czech business. Prior to joining Deloitte, he served as a board member and Deputy CEO of Česká Spořitelna with responsibility for investment banking. He has participated in, or led many major transactions that have occurred in the Czech Republic in recent years. These include a number of sell-sided advisory projects for large and medium national companies along with buy-side advisory projects for large national and multinational companies.
