Big hearts, hard work and resilience all were celebrated Thursday in West as the Texas Governor Rick Perry, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Bohuslav Sobotka, and Chairman Fred Malek and Director Phil Kasik of AFoCR visited Central Texas to break ground on West’s new Sokol gymnasium.
Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and Gov. Rick Perry helped turn shovels of dirt at the site and both addressed the crowd of well-wishers to inaugurate the construction of the gym.
Sokol, a traditional Czech youth sport movement and gymnastics group founded in Prague in 1862, primarily is designed to provide fitness training. At first the training extended to men and later included women. Sokol now includes social interactivity, as well, such as parties and other community events intended to help maintain their Czech heritage.
The project will take about a year, but when finished the gym will serve as a gathering place for athletes and citizens alike. The gym is being built on property that was laid waste by the April 2013 explosion at the West Fertilizer Plant.
